Career choice is a process, not a single event. Individuals entering the job market or changing jobs can benefit from services that help them explore the following questions:
- “Who am I?” (What are my interests, skills, and values?)
- “Where am I going?” (Career exploration: finding a satisfying career)
- “How do I get there?” (Career planning)
Individuals who can benefit from career counseling might include high school, college, or professional school graduates, midlife career changes, or those facing unexpected personal circumstances or the revision of personal goals. Those contemplating second careers as a result of downsizing, retirement, or the need for additional training can also be helped.
The career counseling process guides you, the client, through self-exploration and discovery; exploration of the world of work and career clusters; an understanding of the economic constraints and current employment trends; and in-depth investigations of related and nonrelated careers. The process continues with identification and assessment of skills, attitudes, aptitudes, and continuing education (formal courses, apprenticeships, internships, etc.), which the client may need to develop and/or change to make personal choices and decisions that are more viable. The intervening process, of course, is the development of carefully constructed strategic plans to achieve established life and career goals.
For clients holding or seeking higher-level administrative/management positions, in-depth analysis of personal and personnel management strategies is vital to the career counseling process. Assessment of personal and personnel strategies with an eye toward implementation of the most effective strategies will occur. Helping the client become more effective in present or future positions is the counseling objective.
